Emir and Jill – Strathaven Hotel

Emir and Jill live on the other side of the world in Auckland in New Zealand. They met several years back after both left Scotland to work in the land of the kiwis. Jill originally hails from Strathaven and Emir from Dundee so when they were deciding where to get married, it made sense to get back to Scotland to party with family and friends. Jill told me she has missed the cold of our winters and longed for a crisp winter wedding. That’s exactly what she got – it was freezing!

It was back again to my favourite home venue, the Strathaven Hotel, and fortunately the temperature outside didn’t match the warmth of the welcome inside from Sheila and Malcolm.  I really do love getting back to the Strathaven Hotel and, no matter what the weather’s like outside, every wedding here never fails to impress. Emir and Jill had a wonderful wedding and they are blessed with exceptional family and friends and it was great to see so many of them so relaxed and so happy to be in their company once again.  They are also blessed with the most beautiful daughter, Eloise, she was dressed like a princess and she played her part in the proceedings perfectly.

Although happily settled in New Zealand, there are parts of Scottish life they both miss dearly. In addition to Jill’s fondness for the crisp winter days, Emir is a dyed in the wool Dundee United fan – the so called “arabs”. Hopefully he managed to catch the ne’erday derby in Dundee and his team’s impressive 6-2 victory – a belated wedding gift no doubt!

My thanks and best wishes go to each and every guest and member of staff at the hotel for their patience and co-operation. Special thanks go to Fiona, Lana, Amany, Megan, Eloise, Senga, Michael, Stevie, Garry, Rhys, Owen and Nathan, with an extra special mention for David, Linda, Lorraine and Amgad – you all contributed so much to make sure the wedding was perfect and to arrange it all over Skype from half-way around the world says so much for you all. Thanks again to Emir and Jill for the opportunity to play my small part and may your marriage and your family continue to be blessed with everything that is good in life. Here are a few reminders of your perfect day……

Ed and Nicola – Glasgow University Engagement

Where does the time go? My recent hectic schedule has limited my chances to create many blog entries. I have lots to catch up on but I was so impressed by the location for last week’s photo-shoot that I had to get this posted. Ed works at Glasgow University and he invited me along during the holidays to take photographs for a pre-wedding shoot with his fiancé Nicola. I hadn’t realised we would be in such a grand location and I was bowled over by the surroundings – the Grade A listed Gilbert Scott building is the second largest neo-gothic building in the UK and is second only to the Houses of Parliament! It is a majestic location and Ed arranged for a visit at a time when the place was deserted – we literally had the whole building to ourselves. My hour long shoot ended up taking two hours. Sorry it took so long Ed and Nicola but I think the results were worth the effort! I’m really looking forward to your wedding later this year. Happy New Year everyone!

David & Gillian – Glasgow Riverside Pre-Wedding Shoot

David & Gillian – Glasgow Riverside Pre-Wedding Shoot

David and Gillian thought for some time about selecting an interesting location for their pre-wedding shoot and I am very glad they did. Despite Glasgow hosting Radio 1’s “Big Weekend” and the SECC hosting the Ideal Homes show, we decided to meet up on a very quiet Sunday afternoon by the Quay. It seemed everyone else thought it would be too busy! It was perfect. The sun split the sky for all of an hour and we got the perfect conditions to take pictures of a perfect couple in and around a few iconic Glasgow landmarks. I really can’t wait for D&G’s big day but here are a few favourites I took of the future Mr & Mrs in and around the sights of the Clyde…….

Alison and Colin – Hilton Dunkeld House Hotel

Some time ago Alison and Colin spent a weekend at the Hilton Dunkeld House Hotel and fell in love with the place. So much so that they decided to get married there. And who could blame them! It is the most idyllic location – the hotel sits on the banks of the river Tay in deepest Perthshire and when the sun shines like it did for Alison and Colin it becomes one of Scotland’s most beautiful wedding venues. The best weddings, of course, are all about the people rather than the surroundings and Colin and Alison are my type of people! Katie and I had a great day in the company of their family and friends. An intimate wedding ceremony took place on the lawns of the hotel in brilliant sunshine – Scotland has been basking in glorious weather, I kid you not! Guests then had the enviable task of walking all of twenty yards to the drinks reception on the terrace before adding a further five yards for the dinner reception. It was magical!

My thanks to James, Gerti, Victoria and all of the staff at the Dunkeld House Hotel for looking after Katie and I and special thanks to Colin, Alison, your friends and family (especially the Wilsons!) who helped make it such a memorable day. Oh and a special mention for Barney the boxer whose paws went straight from the River Tay up on to Alison’s dress! A quick magic photographer’s scrub and no-one ever noticed!

Good luck you two and here are a few of my favourites from your special day………………..

Katie and Bobby – Soon to be Mr & Mrs!

I met Katie and Bobby at the Torrance Hotel in East Kilbride on another hot Scottish summer’s day – (really!). We got together to go over the final preparations for their wedding later in July. Katie and Bobby both work for the same bank and they absolutely have their heads screwed on – as charming and organised as I’ve had the pleasure to photograph. They wanted to set me a unique wee task and Bobby will then apply some post processing skills so watch this space to see if we manage to pull it off! Can’t wait for their wedding but here are a few pre-shoot pictures from the Hotel…………..

Claire and Paul Are Getting Married!

I was introduced to Claire and Paul by Claire’s aunt Monica and I could tell straight away they all share the same bright, bubbly and good looking genes! Claire and Paul are getting married in Hamilton next year and already I have it penciled in as a day to remember. Katie and I met them at Chatelherault in South Lanarkshire on one of the most beautiful days of the year – warm glorious sunshine, a photographer’s nightmare! Nonetheless we found some shady cover and snapped away to try and find the perfect “save the date” image. They were naturals and I reckon I have loads of contenders. What do you think?………..

Claire and Kirk at Chatelherault

Claire and Kirk are getting married soon in Hamilton . I eventually got to meet them last weekend after months of communicating online and after we had abandoned our previous meeting – because of our lousy spring weather! This time we picked the perfect time and we even managed to spot that rare West of Scotland creature – blue sky!

We met at Chatelherault Country Park in Lanarkshire which is the former Hunting Lodge of the Duke of Hamilton. The lodge was designed by William Adam and completed in 1734 and is now a five star visitor attraction. It is also a special events venue and a photographer’s delight.

The Duke of Hamilton also holds the French noble title of Duke of Châtellerault after it was bestowed originally in 1548, for James Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Arran, and Regent of Scotland, who arranged the marriage of Mary, Queen of Scots, to the Dauphin Francis, son of King Henry II, and who had been promised a duchy by the Treaty of Châtillon, 1548. He subsequently turned against the Queen in 1559, and his French estates and title were confiscated. However the Hamilton Chatelherault title was revived in 1864 by non other than the Emperor Napoleon III !!

The lodge buildings originally provided kennels, stables and accommodation for hunting parties returning from the woodlands to the south. Adam jokingly referred to his creation as ‘The Dogg Kennel’. Quite a kennel don’t you think? It is a special place and the gardens are just perfect for a pre-wedding shoot.

It was great to finally get to meet Claire and Kirk. They are a lovely couple and I am so looking forward to the wedding in a few weeks time and doing all I can to ensure they have a fantastic day. Here are a few of my favourites from our photo session at a truly stunning location.
